Personalized Christmas gifts for kids: 10 ideas, honestly compared

· 9 min read

A child captain on a sunlit island, from The Island's Great Secret

Disclosure first: we make personalized animated films, and they are on this list. We have tried to be fair to everything else, prices are as of November 2026 (check them, they move), and where something beats us on price or tradition we say so.

Almost every Christmas gift can have a name printed on it now, which is exactly why a name alone no longer feels special. The useful question is not "is it personalized?" but "how much of the child is actually in it?" That is how we have compared the ten ideas below.

The three levels of personalized

Level one is the name. A stocking, an ornament, pajamas with an embroidered initial. Lovely, cheap and over in a second: the child reads their name, smiles and moves on.

Level two is the name in a story, with a drawn likeness. This is the personalized book. You pick hair, skin tone and sometimes glasses or freckles, and a cartoon version of the child appears on every page. At three to six, hearing their own name read out in a story is genuinely magical.

Level three is the child themselves: their real face, moving, as the hero of a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Only one gift on this list does that. It is ours, and it is the reason we started the company.

1. A film where your child is the hero (Storied)

One clear photo of the child becomes the main character of a five-minute animated film, with a narrator and an original score. In The Dragon's Apprentice they befriend the young dragon everyone else feared. In Around the World they bring colour back to a grey town with a small bright bird. In The Island's Great Secret they captain a treasure hunt and learn one calm breath from an old turtle. A person checks every scene before it is sent.

Why it is first on personalization: it is the only gift here where the child sees themselves, not a drawing with their name on it, and the reaction is different. Kids recognise their own face in the first seconds and usually ask to watch it again before it has finished.

Why it works for Christmas: it arrives by email within 24 hours, so there is no shipping deadline to miss, and three films for $54.99 covers siblings or cousins in one order. Honest caveats: none of our films is Christmas-themed (they are year-round adventures, which is why they are still being watched in July), and it is a screen, so if the house has strict screen rules, ask first.

2. Hooray Heroes Christmas book

Of the personalized-book companies, Hooray Heroes gets the drawn likeness closest: skin, hair, eye shape and colour, glasses, freckles, and a Christmas title that can feature one child or two. Most of their books are about $40 on sale. They print in the US and ship within about three days, which makes them the safest book to order in December.

Best for: a bedtime read during the weeks before Christmas, and households that prefer paper to screens.

3. Wonderbly "Your Night Before Christmas"

Wonderbly, now owned by Penguin Random House, has the prettiest illustrations in the category. Its Christmas book starts at $39.99 and puts the child, by name and with a character you pick to look like them, into the night before Christmas. It is printed in two to four working days, but standard shipping can take a week and a half, so this one belongs on a list made before Thanksgiving.

4. A personalized Santa video (Portable North Pole)

For more than a decade, the free Portable North Pole video, where Santa holds up the child's photo and says their name, has been part of a lot of families' Decembers. A paid pass, around $15 a year, unlocks more videos and calls. It is about belief rather than keeping: it lands for a minute in December and then waits until next year. We compare it with our films properly in Santa videos vs. a film starring your child.

5. A letter from Santa

A letter on North Pole paper with the child's name, a friend's name and a mention of something they did this year costs roughly $6 to $20. Handwritten-looking letters beat printed ones. It is the one gift on this list that ends up in a memory box rather than on a shelf or a screen.

6. An ornament with their name and the year

Cheap, about $12 to $30, and it gets better every year: by the time the child is ten, the tree tells their story. The trick is to make it a series, the same maker or style every year, so it becomes a tradition rather than a trinket.

7. A Christmas Eve box

A wooden box with the child's name engraved, filled on Christmas Eve with pajamas, a book, a hot chocolate sachet and a small treat. The box costs $25 to $50 and comes back out every year. What is inside is what you make of it, which makes it a great container for any other gift on this list.

8. A wooden name puzzle

Best for children under four. Each letter of their name is a chunky puzzle piece, $25 to $45 from countless Etsy makers. Not a Christmas-morning gasp, but quietly still in the house years later.

9. A Cameo Kids video

A short video message where a character the child loves (or Santa) says their name, about $25 to $30, delivered within about a week. If the child's entire personality right now is one character, this will land. They are the audience, not the star, and it is usually watched once or twice.

10. Name pajamas or a stocking

Matching Christmas pajamas with names make the photo, and a named stocking hangs for a decade. Both are useful level-one gifts, and both work best as the supporting act, not the main present.

How we would spend $60 on one child

A Storied film for Christmas morning ($29.99) and a name ornament ($15 or so) for the tree, with the free Santa video in early December. The film is the moment, the ornament is the tradition, and the Santa video keeps the magic going for nothing. If the house is screen-free, swap the film for the Hooray Heroes book.

For two or three kids, the three-film bundle at $54.99 is cheaper per child than any book on this list, and every sibling gets their own story.

Questions parents ask

What is the most personal Christmas gift for a child?

One that uses the child themselves rather than just their name. Most personalized gifts print a name or draw a cartoon likeness; a personalized animated film like Storied uses one photo to make the child's own face the hero of a five-minute story, which is why kids react to it so strongly.

What age is a personalized Christmas gift best for?

Roughly three to seven. Under three, children don't yet care much about their name; from about eight, some find it babyish. Between those ages, seeing or hearing themselves in a story is the most exciting thing a gift can do.

Is it too late to order a personalized Christmas gift?

Printed gifts need to ship by mid-December: USPS recommends sending by December 17 for Ground Advantage and December 18 for Priority Mail in 2026. Digital gifts have no shipping deadline. A Storied film arrives by email within 24 hours, so it can be ordered right up to Christmas Eve, though we suggest ordering by December 22 so you can watch it before you give it.

Does Storied have a Christmas film?

Not yet. The three films (a dragon story, a trip around the world and an island treasure hunt) are year-round adventures. That turns out to be a feature: it is a Christmas gift they keep watching long after the tree comes down.

Their face. Their story. Under the tree.

A five-minute animated film with your child as the hero, made from one photo and in your inbox within 24 hours. $29.99, or all three films for $54.99.
