Christmas
Personalized Santa videos vs. a film starring your child
· 6 min read

Every December, parents search for "personalized video from Santa", and they are usually looking for one of two different things without realising it. One is a moment of belief: Santa knows my name. The other is a gift: something about the child that they will keep. The products are very different, and so is what you should pay.
We make the second kind, so read this knowing that. We also think the first kind is wonderful, and many families should do both.
Side by side

What a Santa video does well
Portable North Pole has been the default for more than a decade, for good reason. The free version, where Santa checks his book and holds up the child's photo, is genuinely magical for a four-year-old who believes. It is free, it is instant, and the paid pass adds calls and more videos for around $15 a year.
Cameo's Santa and character videos feel more live: a real performer says the child's name and a few details you provide. They cost $25 to $30 and take up to about a week.
The limit is built in. In a Santa video, Santa is the star and the child is the audience. It is a greeting. It is perfect for keeping belief alive on December 1, and it has done its job by December 26.
What a film starring the child does differently
In a Storied film, the child is the main character. One photo becomes the hero of a five-minute animated story with a narrator and an original score: in The Dragon's Apprentice they are the only one in the village brave enough to befriend a frightened young dragon. Their face, their name, their story.
That changes how it is watched. Children don't watch a film about themselves once; they watch it on repeat, show it to visiting relatives and ask for it in March. It is a gift that happens to be a video, not a Christmas greeting.
Honest trade-offs: it costs more than a free Santa video, it is not about Santa (none of our films is Christmas-themed), and it takes up to 24 hours to make rather than seconds.
Which one should you choose?
- If you want to keep the magic of Santa alive: the free Portable North Pole video, early in December.
- If the child is obsessed with one character: a Cameo, for the one-time thrill.
- If you want the gift itself, something personal they keep: a film starring them.
- Our honest answer for most families: both. The free Santa video in early December, the film on Christmas morning. Together they cost $29.99.
One thing to check before you upload a photo
Any service that asks for a child's photo should tell you what it does with it. Check that the photo is used only to make your video and that you can ask for it to be deleted. Be wary of cheap template sellers that don't say. We wrote a longer checklist in personalized birthday videos: what to check, and it applies to Christmas just as well.
Questions parents ask
Is the Portable North Pole Santa video free?
The basic personalized video is free. A paid pass, around $15 a year in 2026, unlocks more videos and calls.
What is a good alternative to a personalized Santa video?
If you want something the child keeps beyond December, a personalized film where they are the hero, like Storied, is the closest alternative. It uses one photo to put the child's own face into a five-minute animated story, rather than Santa talking to them.
Can I use a Santa video and a personalized film together?
Yes, and many families do. The Santa video keeps the magic going in early December; the personalized film is the gift under the tree.
